Tales from the paddock: Esports season begins with a podium and a Top Six lockout

P3, a second podium finish of the season and a tenth with the Mercedes-AMG PETRONAS F1 Team: George Russell can look back on the 2023 F1 season with a sense of achievement. “I’m really happy to have brought it over the line, that was one of my best races of the season and I’m proud to finish this way,” said George after the thrilling season finale in Abu Dhabi.

On the same weekend that the 2023 F1 campaign came to an end in Abu Dhabi, the F1 Sim Racing World Championship season was just getting underway at Dreamhack Winter in Jönköping, Sweden. The Mercedes-AMG PETRONAS Esports Team will be represented this season by two-time champion Jarno Opmeer, multiple race winner Dani Bereznay and up-and-coming talent Jake Benham. First off the blocks were Jarno and Dani: Jarno progressed from eighth on the grid to finish in P2 and secure his first podium of the season, while Dani took P6 in a close contest. After this first race, the team is now level on points with Alfa Romeo and Ferrari, with all three tied for top spot in the Constructors’ Championship.

At the first event of the 2023/24 Digital Nürburgring Endurance Series season, the Mercedes-AMG E-Sports teams monopolised not only the podium but also the next three places on the leaderboard. After 3½ hours of racing, the BS+COMPETITION pairing of Lucas Hermann (FRA) and Norbert Kiss (HUN) at the controls of the number 9 Mercedes-AMG GT3 took the chequered flag as winners in a 58-strong field. Hermann left it until the penultimate lap before taking the lead, pulling off a great passing manoeuvre at Döttinger Höhe. The winning duo shared the podium with runners-up Vasilios Beletsiotis and Fabio Rauer (both GER) of Mercedes-AMG E-Sports Team Williams Esports and third-placed Luca-Sandro Trefz (GER) and Gaël Valero (FRA) of Mercedes-AMG E-Sports Team HRT by UoL. Mercedes-AMG E-Sports Team Williams Esports, Nürburgring eSports and M&J Downforce finished in fourth, fifth and sixth place respectively. The calendar of the Digital Nürburgring Endurance Series comprises a total of five races. The season finale on the virtual Nürburgring-Nordschleife will take place on 2nd March 2024. Mercedes-AMG celebrated another sim racing success in the IMSA Esports Global Championship. Luke McKeown (GBR) and Alejandro Sanchez (ESP) operating the #101 Mercedes-AMG GT3 of Mercedes-AMG E-Sports Team ART prevailed on the virtual race track at Watkins Glen. The two Mercedes-AMG E-Sports Team Williams Esports cars finished fourth and fifth.

Asian Le Mans Series:
In the double-header at the Sepang International Circuit, AlManar Racing by GetSpeed registered two Top Five results in the GT class. Al Faisal Al Zubair (OMA), Martin Konrad (AUT) and Fabian Schiller (GER) finished fourth in both of the two four-hour races. Triple Eight Race Engineering also scored valuable points for two Top Ten results: sharing the cockpit of the #88 Mercedes-AMG GT3, Broc Feeney (AUS), Prince Jefri Ibrahim (MAS) and Luca Stolz (GER) finished the first two races of the season in seventh and sixth positions. The second stop on the Asian Le Mans Series itinerary (3rd/4th February) takes the contestants to Dubai.

The last race of the year at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya ended with a class victory for Mercedes-AMG Customer Racing. After two hours of racing, Salvador Tineo Arroyo and Luis Gonzalez Martinez (both ESP) in the #130 Mercedes-AMG GT4 fielded by Motor Club Sabadell crossed the finish line as winners in the GPR classification.
